Why isn’t my water damage covered?

Dry rot or mold due to persistent water leaks over time (more than 14 days) is not covered under your homeowner’s insurance policy.  Even a small leak can become a major problem, so knowing what you’re covered for and how to prevent water damage are equally important.  I’ve listed a few tips to help uncover potential water damage down the road which will save you bucket loads of money down the road.

• Check appliance hoses, replace rubber hoses with steel braided hoses.
• Broken tiles in the shower can allow water to get into the walls and floors, replace tile and re-grout regularly.
• When on vacation, turn the water supply to your house off.
• Keep gutters cleaned and storm drains clear of debris.
• Run your dishwasher and washing machine only when you are home.
